BOSFCPUG to continue to cultivate present and new compelling industry relationships
Colorist Alex Bickel was a featured guest of the Boston Final Cut Pro User Group's recent joint meeting with the Boston Avid User Group, held at Rule Boston Camera. BOSFCPUG invited Alex to the event for a case study on a commercial ad campaign for the NY Stock Exchange, in which Alex was the colorist.
Alex shared the workflow process throughout the commercial project, which was primarily shot on the Red One camera and Canon 5D Mark II HDSLR. Editorial for the project originated on the Avid, in which Alex then moved the project into Final Cut Studio to grade it in Color and then the commercial was finished in Autodesk Flame. Alex, who currently heads up the Color department for Outside Editorial in Soho, NYC, demonstrated throughout the case study how he approaches a scene during a session, dissecting the frame into pieces to tell a stronger story through color.

"The workflow that Alex discussed at our joint event is really where our focus lies for 2010," states Daniel Berube, Founder and President of BOSFCPUG. "Whether you edit with Adobe, Apple or on the Avid, oftentimes you're taking your project outside of your favorite NLE in order to make that NLE work better for you."

Also featured at the joint meeting was Boston-based EditShare. Both Andy Liebman, Founder and CEO, and Jeff Herzog, Product Manager, were on hand to demonstrate EditShare's Universal Media Files technology, which allows editors to capture one set of media files that can be read by both Avid and Final Cut Pro. Andy and Jeff showed how the clips can be edited into sequences that can be freely exchanged between Avid and Final Cut Pro with no re-rendering, re-linking, or transcoding required.

"Today, the BOSFCPUG continues to expand its mission to break down the barriers that we all face as digital content creators and storytellers," continues Berube. "BOSFCPUG will always have Final Cut Pro at its' roots and focus, that will never change. Advances in our craft continue. Production, post production and delivery workflows continue to merge together based on advances in tapeless acquisition, XML and metadata, new and emerging HD codecs, software and hardware, handheld filmmaking and new advances in distribution and delivery. Digital content creators will continue to discover new ways to collaborate as we move back and forth between NLEs based on tapeless workflows. It's BOSFCPUG's mission in 2010 to further collaborate with like-minded content creators, organizations and educational institutions who desire to help contribute to and build awareness to what the future of digital content creation holds for our New England production community."
